International Collaboration
Summer School with TU Berlin, Germany
Conducted under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University of Duhok (UoD) and Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), the “Public Spaces of Everyday Urban Life” Summer School serves as a major milestone in international academic collaboration. The initiative was coordinated by Dr. Hassan Elmouelhi (Habitat Unit, TU Berlin) and Dr. Layla Mohamed Raswol (UoD)
Coordinated jointly by the Habitat Unit at TU Berlin and the Department of City Planning at UoD, the program enables third-stage (6th semester) students to engage in international academic exchange, urban field studies, and hands-on design activities focused on public space governance.

Comparative Workshops & Spatial Surveys: Interactive seminars analyze public space typologies across Germany and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, complemented by urban walking studies through iconic public realm sites including Alexanderplatz, the Berliner Dom, Brandenburg Gate, and Potsdamer Platz.
Open-Space Management & Community Integration: Students examine large-scale open-space management at Tempelhofer Feld, explore urban greening and community-led gardening at Prinzessinnengarten Jacobi and Allmende-Kontor, and investigate social integration models at community hubs like The Open Kitchen (Hejmo).
Identity, Governance & Street Culture: Seminars address power dynamics, public space governance in Arab cities, and urban real estate. Field studies along corridors like Sonnenallee and Neukölln street markets allow students to evaluate how identity, commerce, and social history shape urban spatial character.

Suzanne Deal Booth Institute for Heritage Preservation (World Monument Fund WMF)
The Department of City Planning at the University of Duhok (UoD) has entered into a landmark academic collaboration under the newly established Suzanne Deal Booth Institute for Heritage Preservation at World Monuments Fund (WMF). Made possible through a $10 million founding gift from advocate and philanthropist Suzanne Deal Booth, the Institute serves as a global strategic center for training, research, and professional engagement in cultural heritage conservation.
Through this initiative, UoD joins a select network of global academic institutions—including Columbia University, the University of Pennsylvania, Tulane University, and Carleton University—to advance heritage preservation research and field-based education.
