Symposium on Water Network Challenges in Duhok
VNG International, in collaboration with the College of City and Regional Planning, University of Duhok, conducted a symposium on illegal connections and leakages in Duhok governorate's water network. The symposium was conducted on Wednesday, 19/02/2025, at the Cultural and Social Center of the University of Duhok.
This initiative is part of the project: Assessment of Geo-Related Objects for Duhok Governorate’s Water Directorates (Directorate of Water – Duhok and the Directorate of Water Outskirts Duhok). Being part of the SDLG programme, which aims to strengthen the resilience of subnational governments and communities, including host, refugee, and IDP populations.
The symposium was targeted at many relevant Water and Environmental Directorates and NGOs working in Duhok, with participants from high-level managers, university lecturers, and engineers working within Duhok's institutions.
The discussion was led by Dr. Basheer Saeed, head of the Department of Spatial Planning, and Mrs. Rawshan Atrooshi, VNGI Iraq Country Director. This symposium focused on challenges, data gaps, and policy solutions to enhance water management in Duhok. Covering many aspects related to the water assessment project, including issues of illegal connections, leakages, and drought, the symposium aimed at discovering root causes, strategy development, and proposal of next steps.
